MPs from all parties lined up to criticise a government “stitch-up” as it emerged they would be allowed to vote on only 11 relatively minor EU justice and home affairs measures, not the whole package of 35 that includes the European arrest warrant.

As a member of the LIBE committee and the UK Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman, she has been actively involved in the area of European police and criminal justice cooperation and has taken a strong interest in particular in the operation of the European Arrest Warrant. An arrest warrant, valid throughout the European Union, that requires the member state receiving the warrant to arrest and transfer a suspect or sentenced person to the member state that has issued the warrant. so that the person can be put on trial or complete a prison sentence. The EAW applies is intended for people who are due to stand trial, be sentenced or serve their sentence and applies only to crimes where the maximum penalty is at least 12 months in prison.
